The Sanctum is a project investigating what spirituality means in today's society. It has been proven that following spiritual practices (meditation, mindfulness, religious practices) aids people in coping with day to day struggles, giving meaning to both positive and negative experiences and a realisation of being part of something bigger. In previous years the population has been more engaged with the religious aspect of spirituality; but in the present day, with increasing numbers of agnostics and atheists, how do people bring spirituality into their lives, if at all? I designed and built a 3 part installation situated at the Hermitage in Dunkeld, Perthshire, to engage with the public on the subject of spirituality. My aims were to create a spatial engagement tool to instigate conversation and from that build a profile on what spirituality means in 2015.
